DoSTOR Dec14,2007-- China Storage Forum 2007(CSF2007) was held in Beijing International Convention Center during December 12 to December 13 ,2007 by DoSTOR. The theme of this summit is green storage. More than 1,000 people participated the event ,including the top storage vendors at home and abroad, authority analysis agencies, government officials and users from various industries and SI.

A storage Feast in China

China Storage Forum(CSF) is China's largest storage networking event, which held annually since 2005, spreading new technologies and industry trends of storage industry. CSF2007 was a two-day summit with 10 keynote speeches in the morning, and 21 speeches at 3 sub-forum in the afternoon.

29 vendors attended the summit and displayed their products and technology. Besides Brocade, BakBone, Commvault, EMC, FalconStor, Fujitsu, Hitachi, LSI, IBM, NetApp, Symantec, Quantum, VMware, 3 PAR, it also attracted strong news effect vendor H3C, and many domestic vendors for example Brainaire, Huawei, Inspur, Inforcore, Infortrend, Soul, Toyou.  

What Cause such a hot Storage Feast?

In 2007, China's stock market was really very hot .But comments said that it was irrational flourish.

In 2007, China's storage market was also very hot. Different from the stock market, it is rationally prosperous. Because behind the prosperity is the huge storage need of the clients whose concept is changing heavily.

A few years ago, when storage vendors introduced products to customers, whose first reaction was always like this: "storage vendors are just in the promotion of their own products and maybe sell something not necessary to me".

But now, clients are changing their mind. In F2007, many users communicated to the storage engineer about their problems they've met in their storage systems. And they learned new technology on their own initiative asked questions to vendors' technical personnel sincerely.

The Theme of the summit----Green Storage

Ten years ago, we were just concerned about economic development. The neglect of environmental protection almost caused irreparable ecological disaster to Taihu Lake Basin ,Dianchi and the Huaihe River valley.Now we have to spend lots of money to deal with the pollution. For example, Governor of Jiangsu Province Luozhijun said on Jan 25th:"This year, the provincial financial will invest more than 2 billion yuan to manage Taihu Lake, and 10 to 20 percent of incremental fiscal revenue of Taihu Lake Basin cities must be earmarked for the pollution treatment of Taihu Lake."

Thus we should not walk along the old road-developing economic at the cost of environment. Now, we should attach importance to environmental protection.

It was reported that 37 to 40 percent of hardware energy consumption in data center was accounted for storage devices. Green storage is imperative.

Dose the vendors have found energy efficient storage solutions for the clients yet? Of course they have. According to this forum, we learn that green storage isn't just an idea. Many technologies fall into various areas of storage, such as Thin Provisioning, De-Duplication, Tiered Storage, MAID(Massive Arrays of Idle Disks). A large number of technology has been echoed in the products. For example, NetApp's Unified Storage, Quantum's DXi StorNext data management software platform, FalconStor's VTL have got De-Duplication in them, so as to solve a lot of duplication of data.
